Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions from families, donors, and providers.
What is HIE?
Neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a type of brain injury caused by oxygen deprivation at or around the time of birth. It can affect motor function, cognitive development, and other areas depending on severity. Shiva in Motion supports families of children who sustained HIE at birth. Families affected by neonatal HIE often face complex medical journeys and significant financial challenges.
What is neuroregenerative care?
Neuroregenerative care refers to medically supervised treatments aimed at supporting brain recovery or development following injury. This is an emerging area of medicine. Shiva in Motion funds care only through providers that meet our written eligibility and safety standards.
Is Shiva in Motion a fund for Shiva specifically?
No. Shiva in Motion is not a personal fund for Shiva or any individual. Grants are not made to the founders, directors, officers, relatives, or entities they control. The organization was inspired by Shiva's story, but the mission is to support all eligible families of children with HIE at birth.
Who can apply for a grant?
Parents or legal guardians of children diagnosed with HIE at birth who are seeking care from a provider that meets Shiva in Motion's written eligibility standards. Income is not a factor — families carry financial burden for many reasons beyond income level. Shiva in Motion supports families of children who sustained HIE at birth. See the Apply page for more detail.
How does Shiva in Motion select providers?
We evaluate providers against written eligibility and safety standards covering legal authority, physician oversight, informed consent, transparent pricing, safety protocols, and more. We do not refer families exclusively to any single provider. Full standards are published on the For Providers page.
Can I donate and designate funds for a specific family?
No. Donations to Shiva in Motion support the organization's charitable mission broadly. We are not able to accept restricted donations for specific individuals, as this would not be consistent with our public charity status.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
Shiva in Motion has applied for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Until our status is finalized, we cannot confirm that donations are tax-deductible. We will update this page promptly when our status is confirmed.
How long does the grant process take?
We are in our founding year and are actively building our grant review process. We will publish timeline expectations here as our program is finalized. We will communicate expected timelines to families at each stage.
We are a clinic — how do we get reviewed?
Visit the For Providers page to learn about our eligibility standards and submit a provider inquiry. A formal registration process is being developed and will be available after our soft launch phase.
How do I contact the organization?
